Variscite is a relatively rare and captivating gemstone that shares a similar appearance to turquoise but is distinguished by its generally greener hue, which comes from trace amounts of chromium and vanadium.
• Named after its Origin: The name Variscite comes from "Variscia," the historical name for the Vogtland district in Saxony, Germany, where the mineral was first discovered in 1837.
• "Utahlite": For a time, Variscite was also known as Utahlite, named after the state of Utah in the United States, which is a principal modern source of high-quality, gem-grade material. Other significant sources include Nevada (USA), Australia, and Spain.
• Chemical Composition: Variscite is a hydrated aluminum phosphate mineral. Unlike turquoise, it contains no copper.
• Formation & Pattern: This secondary mineral forms from phosphate-bearing water reacting with aluminum-rich rocks. The striking, spiderweb-like patterns and matrix (often white or brownish veins) seen in many specimens are typically caused by inclusions of the mineral crandallite.
